Happy Halloween!!... So it's Halloween, and I was talking to Carns about it. Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what is it actually celebrating? And how did this peculiar, unique custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a form of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual? There are different accounts of how it came to be, but one common Irish historical account states that Halloween, or "All Saints Day," is actually a day when all the dead spirits come back and look for living bodies to possess. So since the living didn't want to be possessed, they would turn out all their lights and extinguish their fires to make their homes cold and undesirable, and then dress up in strange costumes and create mischief so to scare away the spirits. November 1st was the new year for the Irish Celtics and it was kind of a new year's celebration for them. Some misconceptions that many people have of Halloween: it was not a time where they sacrificed people to the evil gods. It is not a worship to an evil god or some sort of Satan (ie. there is no evidence of any god or demon named Samhain, which many believe.) It did not originate as a satanic festival either. Celts were pagans, not Satanists. Of course, from a Christian standpoint both are in error. But to my mind there is a major difference between pagans (who have not heard the gospel) practicing a holiday containing fairies and elves and Satanists (in rebellion against God) who sacrifice children to the devil. There is no original evidence to indicate that Halloween was any more Satanic than pagan harvest festivals of other religions, like the Romans or the Greeks. Is it wrong to celebrate halloween, as Christians?! Maybe, the choice is yours. I don't personally consider going to a party, a haunted maze, or trick-or-treating really bad (I've experienced all of the above in my past.) But again, the choice is yours. Anyways, I'm off to Screamers tonight, and to a party to see my buddies again. Hope you guys have a happy halloween (just like any other happy day) too. =) [parts taken from a Christian pastor who heavily researched this topic.] posted by jamescl | 2:19 PM
