Love...

If I had the opportunity to tell myself something five years ago, I think I would tell myself that love is a powerful and compelling force, one not to be taken lightly by any means. And after this long period of singleness, (albeit self-induced, content singleness) I would tell myself how lucky I was to find love and to hang on to it, and to work through the little things to make it work.

Long-term commitments require compromise: that is a known fact. It's about being able to solve the little problems like whether you watch the Bucs-Jets game or spend a night at the symphony together. It's deciding whether that last shared honey-oat bagel should be buttered or honey-garlic cream cheesed. Or whether $10.50 should be spent watching yet another Freddie chick flick, or a Jet Li no-plot kung-fu movie. Yes, it's these little things that make a long-term relationship, such as a marriage, so difficult. Having to live day-in and day-out with someone, and all their different habbits. Perhaps Calvin & Hobbes said it best: a good comprimise leaves all sides unhappy.

Long-term commitments aren't easy. They require a lot of patience, empathy, understanding, and yes, even compromise. But make it work and at the end of the tunnel comes the greatest reward one can attain: love.

There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer;
no disease that enough love will not heal;
no door that enough love will not open;
no gulf that enough love will not bridge;
no wall that enough love will not throw down;
no sin that enough love will not redeem...
It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble;
how hopeless the outlook; how muddled the tangle; how great the mistake.
A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
If only you could love enough you would be
the happiest and most powerful being in the world...
