Let The Music Heal Your Soul...

I've discovered over the years that two things provide the best bonding times between people: food and music. Food is pretty self-explanatory: you eat together, you're happy together. But nothing breaks down an akward silence or uncomfortable barrier like belting out your favourite BSB tune with your buddies or breaking out into your unique rendition of the YMCA (complete of course, with all the actions.)

Of course, choosing the right tune for the right time is of paramount importance, as a poorly timed song could potentially lead to more than a few menacing glares. For example, it is probably not advisable to spontaneously break out into song and dance of Britney's Hit Me Baby One More Time during a funeral, as some may deem it disrespecful. (Perhaps From the Bottom of My Broken Heart would be a better choice in that circumstance.) So to aid you loyal readers in combatting these potential problems, I've decided to share some of my favourite experiences of spontaneous karaoke and more importantly, appropriate and inappropriate situations to utilize your musical talents (or lack thereof.)

Teenybopper: a guaranteed good time for almost all situations. Nothing beats breaking out BSB or Britney in the morning with your buddies, or even when intoxicated after a long night of clubbing. However, use discretion when belting out your favourite Hanson tune at your local bar, or any other public place for that matter, as it may lead to hospitalization. Also, restraint for Mariah or Celine songs should be exhibited when around the ladies, as they likely won't be too impressed by your constant croaking due to your inability to hit the high notes.

Oldies: especially great for long car rides and road trips. Nothing keeps you up like rolling down the windows, poppin' up the sunroof, and sharing your favourite U2 tune with the rest of the world. Classics like Summer Nights and Dancing Queen are also a staple for all karaoke nights. However, caution is advised when hanging out with young, hip teenagers as you may only get puzzled looks as you reminisce about the 70's.

Hip-Hop: it's always fun to rap to your favourite Puffy hit or slur along with Mase. In fact, if you can rap along with the best of them, most of your macho guy friends will even be impressed. However, try to avoid this habit around playgrounds, toy stores, and anywhere else you might find children, as the profanity might not impress then too much.

Anyways, these are some of my favourite genres to sing during the day. If no one wants to hang out with me anymore, I totally understand.
