Mono II...

Since I've gotten about 35 e-mails/messages asking me what mono is, and various related questions, I thought I'd just post some of your FAQs here to save me time.

What IS mono?
It's an infection that's caused by EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus).

How do you GET mono?
Mono isn't very contagious, but you can get it by direct contact with the saliva of someone who has had mono before. You can get mono by sharing drinks, food, silverware, kissing or even when someone coughs or sneezes. It's most common in people ages 15-30.

What are the symptoms of mono?
Fever, sore throat, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, tiredness, severe headaches, aches and pains, weakness, dizziness, jaundice, rash, and swollen tonsils.

Are there any complications?
Yes. There is a great risk of a ruptured spleen. This can happen if you start being active or walking around too much before you should. Also, there have been some cases of anorexia occur, because some people stop eating because their sore throat is too painful.

Any cures, treatments, or medicines?
There aren't any cures for mono. However, there are some things you can do to treat your symptoms. For your headache and any pains take advil or some pain reliever. For a sore throat suck on cough drops or some type of candy. Also, it's very important to keep a well balanced diet and to drink a lot of fluids. The most important thing to do is to REST!!! There aren't any medicines to help you get over mono. Antibiotics will only make it worse, because mono is a virus and antibiotics can just make viruses even worse.

How long until you can get back to your normal routine?
Some people (mainly athletes) can get over mono in about a week or two. Usually it will last for about a month or two, but some serious cases have lasted from six months to a year!!

There you have it folks. No, I'm not going to die, no, it's not highly contagious, and yes, you will be seeing me around.
