All I Want for Christmas… As it’s only 15 days until Christmas, visions of gifts and goodies dance rampant in many heads. From the precious priceless potent presents of the three kings to the goofy gifts of the twelve days of Christmas, presents are inevitably part of the Christmas season. Fueled on by corporate marketing and consumerism, it has become a staple and chief contributor to the celebrated “Christmas spirit”. And though presents are definitely not the reason for the season, a well thought gift certainly does spread holidays cheer. So I share with you my principles behind gift giving, useful not only during this season but anytime from birthdays to bar mitzvahs. All gift-giving must fall into one of two fundamental categories – practicality or sentimentality. Nothing’s more awkward than saying thank you for that oversized novelty cowboy hat that you know you’ll never wear in your life. At the risk of losing all my friends who’ve gotten me gifts in the past, I’ll stop making fun of prior gifts. Practicality is what every guy wants – things that people can actually use, what a concept! Some of my best gifts that I’ve received have included computer speakers and car fresheners, things that I use in the day to day. For all you ladies out there, let me tell you the mantra that will win your man’s greedy heart – computer peripherals and other tech-toys. For example, memory is the most practical and beloved of any gifts, from hard drive to RAM to USB keys. Sentimentality is what melts a girl’s heart. From making cards to making your own brand of chocolate to buying special flowers, sentimental gifts show the receiver that you care. People, girls especially, want to know that you care and have made the effort into thinking up the present and then actually buying it. The time-tested-true present for showing someone you really care is to fold up thousands of mini origami cranes and then to stuff them into some oversized (almost eerily scary and morbid) glass-Winnie-the-Pooh-head-jar to show that you’ve invested hundred of hours of finger-numbing time. The ultimate gift of course is to combine a gift that is both practical and sentimental at the same time. I can’t divulge too many of my trade secrets on public domain but I will share with you an example. A 1gig USB key with a video slide show of memories and an artistically photo-shopped note and other personal goodies pre-loaded onto the key. It’s all about combining practicality (so they will use it) with sentimentality (so that they feel special.) As for me, I’m looking for a 17’ LCD, a USB laptop light and a Gateway M275XL port replicator *hinthint*. Happy shopping to y’all. posted by jamescl | 4:09 PM
