Internet Nostalgia...

In continuing with my summer time theme of nostalgic memories, I will go through a couple of the big fads that have hit the internet during my teen years that I used to spend many many hours on!! Kind of brings back old memories of much wasted time, but I suppose that's what makes up this new generation of teens.

SixDegrees - Anyone remember six degrees of separation? Very much like Friendster nowadays but it was really one of the originals. It allowed you to see how you were connected to whomever, up to six degrees. In essence, everyone would be connected to everyone so you could really connect to everyone, so it made it kind of pointless, but it was one of the original programs that really got this whole "online community" business started for me.

Manga house is another popular one way back when, when users could build little houses to form virtual communities and have neigbours, etc. You could accumulate points for things that I didn't understand, but I do know that it allowed you to have a little description of your house as well as leave other users comments. Again, pointless but one of those quick flash fads.

Asianavenue is the big one that I'm sure all are familiar with. I remember the good old days when points would get you clothing (I have at least a few AA tshirts and CDs!) and guestbooks and notes weren't limited or restricted. Designing pages gave me the basics of HTML that I use even today as well as popularized the whole asian pride deal among many teens. From member-of-the-week to insane Java AA chats that would crash to accumulating hits and guestbook entries to insane AA names that all featured cute sweet azn gurlie 69 hottie babie or some variation or combination of the above, AA definitely was a big part of many Asian teen's lives!

QuizYourFriends was another fun one that didn't last very long, but people would make up these ludicrous questions such as "What is my third favourite colour and why?" And then they would base their friendship on how well you did on that quiz!! Man!! I don't know and I don't care!!! I remember we used to cheat the system because you could finish the quiz from questions 1-9, then exit it and know all the right answers from 1-9 and then just re-open it and do it again, this time getting everything write (at least 1-9). LOL! All our friends thought we knew them so well, even their obscure questions. Oh man, good times! (I bet I've just lost like 10 friends' respect whom just realized I've fooled them for so many years!)

There were more fun ones like making a fake "blackplanet" account and Findapix, NeoPets and many other mini virtual communities as well that were completely pointless yet consumed so much of my young life. But with the popularity of Friendster, myspace and all the other ones out there right now, it seems as if everytime one dies, another one springs up. I suppose it's become engrained into our cyberspace culture.
